Abstract
The present study adopts a sociological approach to examine the intersection between periodical studies and translation studies. More specifically, it examines translational configurations in relation to various dimensions of the concept of “periodical codes” (Philpotts, 2013) in Bahar (1289–1301 SH), with the aim of elucidating the role of translation in shaping the periodical’s “common habitus” (Bourdieu, 1996). A content analysis of Bahar demonstrates that translation, played a foundational role in shaping the periodical’s common habitus. Translation was manifested not only in the various discursive forms associated with Bahar’s compositional codes, but also in its material codes (page layout and magazine format), economic codes (financial independence), and social codes (the transnational network of translation and translators). Through its selection of translated works in literature, education, women’s issues, politics, and science, Bahar exposed Iranian readers to diverse ideas and social experiences and contributed to broadening their intellectual horizons.
