Abstract
Investigating the impact of poor economic conditions on political participation has been of interest to researchers. There is no consensus in research on the impact of economic hardships on voting behavior and electoral preference. This article, by analyzing at the level of Iranian cities and using a comparative method within the country, attempts to use more up-to-date statistics in examining the relationship between economic conditions and electoral participation. The research showed that feelings of deprivation and unemployment do not have a direct or inverse effect on the level of electoral participation. As life satisfaction increases, electoral participation also increases. The significant relationship between satisfaction with associations, groups, and organizations and the level of invalid votes shows that with increasing such satisfaction, the level of invalid votes decreases. The research also showed that as unemployment rates and satisfaction with private organizations increase in cities, reformist votes increase and fundamentalist votes decrease
